, Becoming an Exceptional Educational Researcher in South Africa

Becoming a great educational researcher in South Africa is not just about collecting and
studying information. It also means understanding the country’s history, culture, and
social problems. In the past, colonialism and apartheid created many challenges in
education, like unfair access to schools, a lack of resources, and not valuing Indigenous
knowledge. A good researcher must see these problems and find ways to make
education fair, inclusive, and helpful for all students.

Research in South Africa must focus on real-life issues, such as overcrowded
classrooms, too few teachers, and students struggling to learn in a language that is not
their home language. A strong researcher asks important questions, thinks carefully,
and looks for ways to improve education. Research should not just describe problems. It
should help solve them by giving teachers, students, and communities the support they
need to do better.

My essay is based on ideas from Linda Tuhiwai Smith’s Decolonising Methodologies
(1999) and values like fairness, courage, curiosity, action, and thinking critically. These
ideas guide my journey as a researcher. I want to challenge unfair systems, listen to
everyone’s voices, and make real changes and doing research that is fair, community-
based, and responsible, I hope to help build a stronger and fairer education system.
