1917 – Wilson sent message to congress
1914 – Archduke of Austria was assassinated
Serbia wanted their Independence
U.S. claimed Neutrality and everyone else was at war
• Majority of the countries imported money, weapons, food, etc. from the U.S.
• U.S. companies and businesses are making money and job opportunities arise
All countries make logistical decision to cut off American supply base by sinking their ships
(warn first, save them, and then sink the ship)
• Great Britain starts sinking ships that were transporting to Germany and set up blockade
to shut out American supplies
• Germany doesn’t have big Navy, but invent U-boat (submarines)
End of American Neutrality
• Germany starts to sink U.S. ships to cut of Great Britain’s supply, but the submarine
doesn’t allow for warning or saving the people
• Lusitania had over 15,000 people (110 Americans)
o U.S. families want the deaths to mean something
Wilson asks Germany to stop sinking ships
• Germany will only stop if they stop supplying to Greta Britain
• Wilson says no because he had slight favoritism for them and a historical connection with
them
Germany showed interest in Caribbean in case they went to war with the U.S. and to use the
Panama Canal (TRIGGER)
1917
• Germany violates Monroe Doctrine (TRIGGER)
• Zimmerman Telegram (TRIGGER)
o If Mexico sides with Germany and Germany wins they will return all their land.
o Treaty of Hidalgo prevented this (Peace treaty between U.S. and Mexico)

• Believe in suffrage (right for women to vote and hold office)
