Week 1: Introductions
Hi everyone, my name is Tasha. I have been practicing nursing for over six years now with a
wide variety of practice. I started in Skill nursing facility for pediatrics and adults, then went to a
Long-term acute care facility for adults. These were during my first year of practice. After one
year of doing that I went into adult medical/surgical unit in a hospital and did that for over a
year and now currently work in the pediatric emergency department where I have been for
over four years now and have been cross trained to also work in the adult emergency
department during this pandemic (we have them separated at my work and do not float
between them). I am currently with hoping that when I finish with my NP that I will be going
into pulmonary specialty. I do have a three-year-old son that is a huge motivation for what I do.
I was born in August.
Informatics to me is the use of technology to with collect and help with analyzing data. With
nursing informatics, we see nursing knowledge with the ability to analyze and collect
information to further the treatment plan of patients. An example of this is used pretty much
everywhere is electronic medical record systems that combine the additional information
together to be easily viewed to improve patient care. The information in electron medical
records can easily contain lab results, diagnostic results, medical provider notes, as well as
nursing notes, and patient assessments with other things as well.
For this course I would like to learn how informatics will help me with my future working as a
NP. Learn different things with technology and with research to help combine and make
treatment plans for my patients and give them assess with different technology available to
work with whole at home for data collection. This will also improve their care and hopefully
with the increased feed-back we will see better compliance of care.
Week 2: Pre TANIC Self-Assessment and Reflection Post
1. How is informatics used?
Informatics is used in many ways and has multiple forms such as the use of
information and computer literacy along with clinical information management.
With this it identifies when a person needs information, and this is used with
online searches and helps identify and evaluate the search findings. Computer
literacy is just that the ability you have in navigating and working the computer.
Lastly, we have clinical information management which is the use of data to
manage clinical decision making and to evaluate results of clinical data.
2. Regarding the Pre-TANIC Self-Assessment for this week, how did your
perceived competency level prior to the self-assessment compared to after
the self-assessment? Explain in detail.
For me it was pretty much the same. I did not think I knew a lot about informatics
and just in general that much about anything. There were parts that I felt where I
was pretty confident and an expert on and then there was questions on thinks I
never knew. A simple example is the email to, cc, bcc, I knew what to and cc are,
but I have never known what the bcc was now I at least know that the ‘b’ stands
, for blind copy. I knew a lot of the stuff on the basic how to work a computer, files,
basics on the internet, but once they were asking about software, and scanning
the computer for viruses and phishing I do not feel like I was very competent in
those areas. I have gotten pretty good at navigating and working Microsoft office
programs through having to do schoolwork on them. Other than websites I know
and for schoolwork I really do not do much with the computer I do not go on a
bunch of unknown sites. I really do rely and hope my spam and virus protect do
work because I do not know anything about doing that.
There are the electronic medical records that we use at pretty much all facilities
now. Each program works different and have the ability to be either user friendly
or not. I have only used one program in my nursing career which is meditech and
it is not very user friendly especially in the beginning. I have gotten very familiar
with it but always learning new things. Since I have not worked with another
electronic charting and I know that I will probably struggle with it in the beginning
to get familiar with it.
This assessment did show me that I have a space to learn and make
improvements in the area of informatics. Which I believed and knew before
taking this assessment.
3. What TWO competencies do you use in your current clinical role?
Provide examples.
The first competency is the ability to use basic computer skills. This will be with
knowing how to at least know how to work a computer. This includes turning on the
computers. How to turn on and off the computer, how to send emails, with working
Microsoft word, and even using the internet with searching things (Farzamdipour, et
al., 2020). I believe that I am competent in basic computer skills and can get
through with what I need to do with my homework and charting at work in electronic
medical records. I do believe that I have areas to grow with my computer skills and
will probably at some point will learn new electronic medical record programs.
The second is the informatic skills which is the skills to implement instruction and
tools. This is helpful with practicing evidenced based practice (EBP) theories. With
school I have learned different skills with searching for information to help with
research projects and just in general with finding EBP. This will help and be useful
in my whole career. Will need to document assessment and test findings and will
let you evaluate the documents and then will make plans for the best care of
patients and will be able to research to further care.
4. Identify TWO resources to develop a strategic plan to enhance your
competency skills.
