PART ONE
THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF RESOURCE EXPLOITATION IN AFRICA:
A FOCUS ON LAND DEGRADATION IN SOUTHERN AFRICA AND THREATS TO THE
FYNBOS BIOME
1. INTRODUCTION
Africa’s abundant natural resources—encompassing arable land, water, oil, minerals,
forests, and wildlife—have long underpinned the continent’s socio-economic development
(UNEP, 2024). These endowments support livelihoods, offer prospects for economic
growth, and contribute significantly to global markets. However, the unsustainable
extraction and use of these resources often lead to severe environmental harm. In
particular, Africa faces challenges such as deforestation, soil erosion, biodiversity loss, and
declining water quality (Wessels, 2016). Within the southern African context, land
degradation has escalated through intensive agriculture, mining, and urban expansion,
undermining both ecological integrity and food security (Laker, 2018). At the same time,
one of the world’s most biologically diverse regions—the Fynbos biome of South Africa—

INTRODUCTION
Africa is endowed with a diverse range of natural resources that play a critical role in
supporting the livelihoods of its people and driving economic development. From
fertile land and rich biodiversity to mineral wealth and energy resources, these
assets present immense opportunities for sustainable growth. However, the rapid
and often unregulated exploitation of these resources has led to significant
environmental challenges across the continent. This assignment explores the
environmental consequences of human interaction with natural resources in Africa,
with a specific focus on land degradation in southern Africa and the threats to the
Fynbos biome, as covered in the study material. Additionally, the assignment
provides a scholarly analysis of a recent peer-reviewed journal article on wildfires in
Sub-Saharan Africa, examining the causes, impacts, and mitigation strategies
associated with this natural hazard. The aim is to critically engage with academic
literature and develop an informed understanding of key environmental issues facing
the continent.
