Designing Curriculum and Instruction II
Overview of the Curriculum:
The curriculum I would like to implement is Everyday Mathematics. This is a spiral
math curriculum that runs from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 6. This comprehensive
curriculum is aligned to meet the Common Core State Standards. Included within the
unit is a unit overview, classroom activities and explorations, homework, in class
extension activities, differentiation suggestions, as well as a digital portal that students
, can use to access games and activities. Half way through each unit there is a hands-on
performance task and at the end of each unit there is a formal assessment. The spiral
curriculum contains several things within each unit so students can keep referring back
to material that they have already learned throughout the course of the year and gain
experience through continuously practicing it.
Rationale for Implementing the Curriculum:
The rationale for implementing the curriculum is that currently, there is not any
cohesiveness with the implementation of a curriculum throughout the Pre-K to Six grade
levels. Our school runs from Pre-K to grade six and within that period of time grade
levels all use a different model of mathematics to provide their instruction. Some use
Mahesh, others use Envisions, some create their own mode of instruction, and one grade
uses Every Day Math. In order for students to grow and improve within their math skills,
it is important for students to get the same cohesive language from year to year.
Providing students with the game curriculum within each grade level will allow students
to reflect upon information learned within their previous years to help supplement the
material they are learning now. Another rationale for implementing this curriculum is
that is allows for students who are at various academic levels to thrive. It does not just
give one activity for each lesson. Instead, it provides differentiation for the students who
may need a little extra practice within the lesson as well as extension for students who
seem to have grasped it quickly and need a little more of a challenge. Along with this, it
