General Marking Guidance

• All candidates must receive the same treatment. Examiners must mark the first
candidate in exactly the same way as they mark the last.
• Mark schemes should be applied positively. Candidates must be rewarded for
what they have shown they can do rather than penalised for omissions.
• Examiners should mark according to the mark scheme not according to their
perception of where the grade boundaries may lie.
• There is no ceiling on achievement. All marks on the mark scheme should be used
appropriately.
• All the marks on the mark scheme are designed to be awarded. Examiners
should always award full marks if deserved, i.e. if the answer matches the
mark scheme. Examiners should also be prepared to award zero marks if the
candidate’s response is not worthy of credit according to the mark scheme.
• Where some judgement is required, mark schemes will provide the principles by
which marks will be awarded and exemplification may be limited.
• When examiners are in doubt regarding the application of the mark scheme
to a candidate’s response, the team leader must be consulted.
• Crossed out work should be marked UNLESS the candidate has replaced it
with an alternative response.

Justification for Question 1 (6 Marks) - Rates of Reaction
Why This Question Was Chosen
The topic of rates of reaction is fundamental in chemistry as it provides students with an
understanding of how chemical reactions occur and the factors that influence their speed. This
question was selected based on its consistent appearance in past Edexcel GCSE Chemistry Paper
2 exams from 2018 to 2024. It aligns with the syllabus's emphasis on practical skills, data
interpretation, and theoretical concepts such as collision theory. By incorporating graph plotting,
rate calculations, and theoretical explanations, this question ensures that students develop a
holistic understanding of reaction kinetics.

In previous papers:

- 2018, Q9: Students were asked about reaction rates involving marble chips and
hydrochloric acid, focusing on practical experiments and collision theory.
- 2020, Q3: A similar experiment involving magnesium and acid required students to
calculate rates and explain results using collision theory.
- 2023, Q2: Graph plotting and interpreting data from a reaction between marble chips and
acid were tested.
These trends highlight the importance of this topic in assessing students' ability to analyze
experimental data and apply theoretical knowledge.

Importance of Learning This Topic
Understanding rates of reaction is crucial for real-world applications, including industrial processes
(e.g., optimizing conditions for manufacturing), environmental science (e.g., understanding pollutant
breakdown), and everyday phenomena (e.g., cooking or rusting). It also develops essential skills
such as graph interpretation, mathematical calculations, and critical thinking.

Usual Patterns That Accompany This Question Type
1. Data Interpretation: Students are often provided with experimental data (e.g., gas
volumes over time) and asked to plot graphs or interpret trends.
2. Rate Calculations: Questions frequently involve calculating the rate of reaction using
tangents or changes in volume/time.
3. Collision Theory: Students must explain how factors like concentration, temperature,
surface area, or catalysts affect the rate.
4. Practical Contexts: Questions are framed around realistic experiments involving acids
reacting with metals or carbonates.
