AP BIO EXAM FRQ Q&A
Design an experiment to test the effect of varying the pH of the sugar solution on the
rate of respiration. - ANSWER-- The experiment would be repeated with the same
samples and trials. The experiment would be measured by
the color change. The control would be no sugar.
- I predict that the enzymes will function optimally at the pH of 8.

What are the components of water potential and why is water potential important for
the movement of water in plants? - ANSWER-- The components of water potential is
*****. The importance of water potential is that it helps move water within the plant,
its involved in transpiration, and ensures water into plant root.

Predict what would happen to typical animal cells placed in 0.0M and 1.0M sucrose
solutions, and expain your prediction. - ANSWER-- I would predict that at 0.0M the
cell would gain water because the cell is hypertonic to its environment, and the
sucrose solution is hypotonic to the cell.
- I would predict that at 1.0M the cell would lose water because the cell is hypotonic
to its environment and the sucrose solution is hypertonic to cell.

Describe the structure and function of TWO eukaryotic membrane-bound organelles
other than the nucleus. - ANSWER-- Vesicles have a bag structure, and transport
materials to and from the ER.
- The endoplasmic reticulum has two structures. The rough ER has attached
ribosomes and the smooth ER is without ribosomes.

Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells have some non-membrane-bound components in
common. Describe the function of TWO of the following and discuss how each differs
in pro and euk. - ANSWER-- DNA contains and transmits genetic information. In
prokaryotes, there are no introns, and in euk there are introns.
- Ribosomes make proteins. In pro, they are free floating in the cytoplasm, and in
euk there are either free or attached to the ER.

Explain the endosymbiotic theory of the origin of euk cells and discuss an example of
evidence. - ANSWER-The endosymbiotic theory suggests that a prokaryotic cell was
engulfed by another cell and formed a symbiotic relationship. The evidence is that
mitochondria and chloroplast contains own DNA.

Identify THREE macromolecules that are components of the plasma membrane in a
euk cell and discuss the structure and function of each. - ANSWER-- Cholesterol is
made of steroids and stabilizes the membrane.
- Proteins are made of amino acids, and acts as enzymes to catalyze reactions.
- Phospholipids are amphipathic and are selectively permeable.

For THREE of the following complex structures, describe the smaller units, their
assembly into the larger structures, and one major function of these larger,
organized structures. - ANSWER-- A euk chromosome is organized into DNA-
>nucleosomes->chromosomes
- It folds from heterochromatin to a condensed chromosomes.
