Data Communications and Computer
Networks chapter 1
Computer Network - ANS-An interconnection of computers and computing equipment that uses
either wires or radio waves over small or large geographic areas.
Local Area Network (LAN) - ANS-Networks that are small in geographic size i.e. floor, building,
or campus
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) - ANS-A network that serves an area of 1 to 30 miles
Wide Area Network (WAN) - ANS-A large Network that encompasses parts of states, multiple
states, countries and the world
Personal Area Network (PAN) - ANS-A network with a few meters between wireless devices
such as PDA's laptops, ect
Campus Network - ANS-A network that spans multiple buildings on a business or school
campus serving an area of roughly 50 kilometers
Voice Network - ANS-a network that transmits only telephone signals (almost extinct)
Data Network - ANS-a network that transmits voice and computer data (replacing voice
networks)
Data Communications - ANS-The transfer of analog or digital data using analog or digital
signals
Telecommunications - ANS-Study of telephones and the systems that transmit telephone
signals
Network Management - ANS-The design, installation, and support of a network and its hardware
and software.
Application Layer - ANS-supports the network applications and may in some cases include
additional services such as encryption or compression. Includes: HTTP, SMTP, FTP, Telnet,
SNMP
Transport Layer - ANS-The layer of the tcp/ip protocol suite that provides reliable end to end net
work connection. where data is split into packets
