Phonemic Awareness

1. a) Use two words to explain the relationship between English sounds
(phonemes) and alphabets (graphemes) in relation to spelling. 4 Marks

(2 marks for two correct words and 2 marks for plausible explanation.)

The relationship between English sounds (phonemes) and alphabets (graphemes)
in relation to spelling can be described in two words: Variable Representation.

This term captures the complex and often inconsistent relationship between
sounds and letters in the English language. According to Wyse and et al. (2013),
"the relationship between phonemes and graphemes is not always
straightforward" (p. 234). This variability can make spelling challenging, as a single
sound can be represented by multiple letters, and a single letter can represent
multiple sounds.

Literacy. Routledge.

b) Explain how phonemic awareness influences the pronunciation of words in
English.

Phonemic awareness plays a significant role in influencing the pronunciation of
words in English. Phonemic awareness refers to the ability to identify and
manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) within words (Wyse & Goswami, 2013).

, This awareness enables individuals to recognize the sound structure of words,
which in turn affects their pronunciation.

When individuals have strong phonemic awareness, they can better articulate
words, syllable stress, and intonation (Kilpatrick, 2015). For instance, recognizing
the individual sounds within a word like "cat" (/k/ /æ/ /t/) helps individuals
pronounce it correctly. Conversely, weak phonemic awareness can lead to
pronunciation errors, such as misarticulating sounds or syllable stress.

245). Routledge.

c) From your knowledge of phonemic awareness after reading Chapter 12 of any
edition of the prescribed text above and pages 96 to 98 of 2025 Study Guide, give
two words that you have learned to spell correctly and two words that you have
been mispronouncing. 4 Marks

Through my study of phonemic awareness, I have gained a deeper understanding
of the relationship between sounds and letters. Two words that I have learned to
spell correctly are:

- Accommodate: I previously struggled to spell this word, but by breaking it down
into its individual sounds , I can now spell it confidently.

- Separate: By recognizing the distinct sounds within this word , I have improved
my spelling accuracy.
