1.1 In view of the statement provided above, explain how pre- and
post-reading techniques enhance critical reading? Your answer should
be in a paragraph of 150 words.
Pre- and post-reading techniques play a crucial role in enhancing
critical reading skills. According to TUT501 (2020: 9), reading functional
writing, such as information boards, differs from reading fiction for
pleasure. To bridge this gap, pre-reading techniques, such as
previewing, predicting, and activating prior knowledge, help readers to
establish a connection with the text and set a purpose for reading
(TUT501, 2020). Post-reading techniques, including summarizing,
questioning, and clarifying, enable readers to critically evaluate the
text, identify main ideas, and make connections with their prior
knowledge (TUT501, 2020). By incorporating these techniques, readers
can develop a deeper understanding of the text, think critically, and
make informed decisions. As a result, pre- and post-reading techniques
are essential in enhancing critical reading skills.
