CHAPTER 12

ABUSE AND VIOLENCE

- Wrongful use and mistreatment of another person
- Most often from someone a victim knows
- Victim could be a spouse, partner, children, elders, or parent
o Age does not play a role in who the victim is
- Emotional, physical, psychological, or sexual in nature
o Can cause injuries in all
o Prioritize safety!
o Could develop PTSD, substance use, depression, anxiety, etc.
- All ages could be aggerated, withdrawn, upset, oblivious, suffer in silence, or feel
guilt or shame
o All ages will fee unlovable, ruined, degraded, humiliated, ruined, ruined, ad
much more
o Could develop depression or suicidal ideations
- Children feel like its THEIR fault and act out in behaviors like missing school or low
self esteem.
- Give them control
o Don’t touch without warning
o Let them be the leader

FAMILY VIOLENCE

- Spouse battery, neglect, physical/sexual/emotional abuse of kids, elder abuse, or
rape.
- Many accept rape form their family members because they are family.
- Might keep them socially isolated and threaten them with killing their pet or a sibling
if they tell anyone (common with children)
- Abuser might control the economic and social life of that child!
o Could emotional manipulate them and assault them
- Alcohol doesn’t make the abuser abuse, but alcohol is commonly used by the abuser
which can make the violence more frequent and more intense.
o Not the cause of abuse
- Intergenerational transmission process: Patterns of violence are continued through
role modeling and social learning.
o Kids who witness the abuse see it how to resolve conflict and think it is apart of
a close relationship
o 1/3 of abusive men are from abusive homes
o Women who come from abusive homes are more likely to expect/accept the
abusive behavior

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

- affects all people and no one in specifically
- Battered immigrant women are at a higher risk
o Language barriers
o Fear of deportation
o Lack of job skills or income
o Get interpreter involved

INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE

, - Misuse of one person by another and said people are in a close intimate emotional
(and/physical) relationship
- Abuse could be of any kind and could be in combination with others
- Emotional and Psychological:
o Includes: name calling, belittling, yelling, threatening, and property destruction
- Physical: shoving, pushing, battering, choking, may result in broken bones, brain
damage, and could even be death
- Sexual: biting, pulling hair, hitting, rape
- Pregnant women do have a higher rate of violence during pregnancy and it can result
in still birth or miscarriage or injury to the mother
o Partner would be more jealous or insecure
o Women would be less physically and emotionally available because she’s
focusing more on the baby and its health
- Abuser wants to feel like they own the victim so no independence can be shown
o Abuser most likely has low self esteem
o Socially unsuccessful
o Emotionally immature and needy
o Jealous of any other attention the woman gives to other people
- Women feel the need to stay with this man
1. ACUTE EXPLOSION
a. Assault is done in this phase
b. Damage is done here
2. HONEYMOON
a. He is so sorry
b. He will go to church and try recovery
c. He will cry and bring you flowers
d. PITTY
e. Can last weeks or months
3. TENSION BUILDING
a. Tension is building again until acute explosion occurs again
- As explosions occur more, injuries increase as this cycle goes on
- Most common pattern but some phases can be skipped
- You HAVE to report if you suspect something (even if you end up being wrong)

ASSESSMENT:

- You might not be treating the patient FOR abuse!
- If you don’t feel confident in reporting, get an opinion form someone else (social
worker or coworker)
- Ask client if they feel safe
- Ask questions about safety

TREATMENTS AND INTERVENTIONS:

- Can obtain an emergency protective order or restraining order (not the solution
always)
- Shelters are temporary housing for women and kids
o These might have a waiting list
o Temporary relief (Find a job and find childcare)
- Therapy/ counseling
- Treatment for PTSD
