Any response to a drug that is not just unintended
Beginning sings can go unnoticed in psych patients because they are psych patients
The following occur most with antipsychotic medications
Lithium toxicity
- Not able to eliminate the drug through the kidneys
- Too much alcohol intake can cause liver problems and incontinent
- Screening is important, I/O and liver functions
S/S: Vomiting and acting like they are drunk (slurred speech and unstable gait)
- Seizures, coma, and death
Aeroponic Overload
- Can be from multiple medication
- Antihistamines, trisula, neuroleptics, antiparkinsonian agents
- Red as a beat, dry as a none, mad as a hatter
- Dry mouth and skin
- Increase of psychotic actions (look for change in actions or increase)
- Flushed skin, hot to the touch, confuse, disorientation, instability vital sings
Neuroleptic malignant syndrome
- Can lead to death in 20% of cases
- Hypoventilation, instability, easily agitated, altered loc and mobility
- Decrease appetite, HR and SOB
- Increase in temperature
- Increased electrolytes and dehydration
- 24-72 hours post development
Extrapyramidal (EPS)
- Dystonia (Earliest)
o Distension in muscle groups
o Distention in back, neck, or face
o Extreme shaking
o Breathing or swallowing issues
- Dyskinesia
o Abnormal movements
o Similar to motor ticks
o Tardy dyskinesia is a LATE sign (around 2 years)
- Akathisia ( Earlier)
o Restlessness motor issues in the hands and feet
o
Any change in physical or mental status or change in mediation, pay close attention to pt
