For AS German Paper 3: Speaking, focus on the following key areas:
1. Topic Preparation:
General Topics: Be prepared to discuss themes such as family, education, the environment, cultural
differences, or social issues. Make sure you can talk about these topics in depth and from various
perspectives.
Personal Experience: Be able to relate the topics to your personal experiences or observations, especially
if asked to give examples or explain your opinion.
Current Events: Stay informed about current events in German-speaking countries, as these may be
relevant for discussions (e.g., politics, culture, environmental issues).
2. Fluency and Coherence:
Practice Speaking: Aim to speak as fluently and naturally as possible. Practice speaking German every
day to build confidence. Engage in mock conversations with classmates, tutors, or language exchange
partners.
Clear Expression: Use linking words and phrases (e.g., "zuerst," "also," "deshalb," "darüber hinaus") to
connect your ideas and ensure your speech flows logically.
Answering with Detail: Provide detailed answers, avoiding simple "yes" or "no" responses. Expand on
your answers with explanations, examples, and justifications.
3. Vocabulary and Grammar:
Range of Vocabulary: Ensure that you are familiar with a wide range of vocabulary on topics such as
culture, social issues, current events, and personal interests.
Grammar: Use a variety of tenses (present, past, future) and complex sentence structures. Correct use of
grammar will help improve your fluency score, so practice using verbs, adjective endings, and word order
correctly.
Pronunciation: Work on your pronunciation to ensure clarity. Pay attention to common pronunciation
issues like vowel sounds, consonant clusters, and word stress.
4. Role Play:
Practice Scenarios: The speaking exam often includes a role-play where you’ll have to act out a situation,
such as booking a hotel, ordering food, or discussing a topic. Practice common scenarios and responses.
Key Phrases: Learn useful phrases for such role-plays (e.g., "Ich möchte...", "Könnten Sie bitte...?", "Ich
habe ein Problem mit...").
