What is data center virtualization?
Ans: Data center virtualization is the conversion of physical hardware
devices into software resources. The hypervisor (ESXi) talks directly to the
physical hardware, presents virtual copies of hardware to virtual
machines, and isolates virtual machines from each other.
vMotion
Ans: Enables running virtual machines to be migrated from one ESXi host
to another without experiencing any downtime, both ESXi hosts must be
connected to the same shared storage and must share common
networking. Change the location of the VM itself (suspends VM and
copies bitmap of VM from one host to another and resumes it on new
host) This transfers the RAM and System State Data of VM without
changing the disk location.

Storage vMotion
Ans: Enables running virtual machines to be migrated from one data store
to another without experiencing any downtime. Operates on data stores.
vSphere Long Distance vMotion
Ans: Migrates VMs across WAN links with little to no latency. (max 150ms
RTT latest documentation 100ms RTT over WAN)
vSphere Data Protection
Ans: A solution for backing up and restoring virtual machines. Creates a
backup of the entire virtual machine, performing virtual machine restores.
Enables local and off-site disaster recovery. Allows restoration of the
replicated backup data to a new target location or to the source
location. Checks VMware tools heartbeat.
vSphere Replication
, 3 | Page
Ans: Is a hardware-independent technology that allows running virtual
machines to be replicated to another site. At the level, storage
independent and mobile. would be considered a small-scale disaster-
recovery/disaster-tolerance solution since it is used to bring back smaller
sections of the environment after a smaller disaster.
Fault Tolerance (FT)
Ans: Enables a mirror to be created of a virtual machine. As changes are
made to the original virtual machine, they are also made to the mirror.
Traffic between primary VM and secondary is called Fault Tolerant
logging. Very bandwidth intensive, vSphere recommends 10GB
dedicated NIC between hosts but not required. Protected VMs will be
slower though.
High Availability (HA)
