TASK 1: Engagement Strategies and Community of Care
A: “Summarize what occurred in the simulation, including a description of interactions with
students that contributed to engagement and learning, and explain how specific strategies
supported positive student behavior and helped students manage conflicts.”
When the Zoom class began with the students, they were outgoing and friendly, for the
most part. Ethan said he felt like I was sitting in a big blue cloud. Most of the students
acknowledged me and said hello. We talked about the weather being cold in February and then
I moved straight to discussing the activity at hand and then I moved to allow the students to
discuss amongst themselves.
As they were discussing the book Little Women and the characters, I kept in mind the
SOAR acronym Stop, Observe, Assess, React. Feedback from one student was she appreciated
that I allowed them to run the discussion on their own for a while. She felt I trusted them to
move forward on their own, and it showed their maturity in the classroom. They had an
, excellent discussion until one student was negative toward the other student, saying she felt
like she was only agreeing and didn’t have her thoughts and opinions. At this point is when I
stepped in, tried to negotiate, and had them work together in a positive learning environment.
