Dr. D and Class,
Many factors support the development of the advanced nursing practice role. Advancing nursing
practice helps develop new skills, opens the door for leadership opportunities, and encourages
personal growth. Lee et al. (2020) explains obtaining a master’s in advanced practice is essential
to ensure the development of the required skills and knowledge to establish competence (p. 782).
Developing new skills, such as data analysis and applying current, constantly advancing
technology to your practice, allows you to identify problems deeper. Applying leadership skills
improves critical thinking skills, which improves patient outcomes and healthcare organization
goals. As I continue furthering my education, I can grow in my personal development to become
resilient and capable of adapting to change, which is inevitable in healthcare.
Although there are many factors that support the development of advanced nursing practice,
there are also barriers that make advanced nursing practice challenging. As a part-time nurse, and
full-time mother of two young children, I understand the importance of maintaining a healthy
work-life balance, which is a barrier for many to further their education. I found it difficult to
manage my time when my children were at a younger age. However, throughout the years I have
seen the importance of both. At times, life can become overwhelming, and it's crucial to
remember to manage and prioritize my time appropriately. Allowing myself to tend to my
children’s needs and be present at their activities yet set aside time for me is crucial for my
success in my career, as a student, and as a mother. There are other barriers to the healthcare
system in general such as emotional burnout, and unfamiliar new advanced technology. One way
to overcome barriers is to recognize that our health comes first. Taking care of myself is not a
luxury, but a necessity that will help me take care of others and be competent in my work.
