QUESTION 1
1.1 Briefly explain the role of transport and competition in the economy. (4)
ANSWER:
Transport plays a vital role in the economy by enabling the movement of goods and people. It forms
the backbone of supply chains, allowing businesses to receive raw materials and deliver finished
products to markets, contributing directly to trade and economic growth. Efficient transport
systems also reduce costs, increase productivity, and help stimulate demand by improving access to
goods and services.
Competition within the transport sector drives improvements in service quality, pricing, and
efficiency. When different transport providers compete, consumers benefit from lower prices,
better service, and innovation. For businesses, competition encourages cost-effective solutions and
improves overall market competitiveness. The combination of effective transport systems and
healthy competition fosters economic development, job creation, and international trade.
1.2 What two groups of users have a need for transport? Explain in full how we distinguish
between these two groups. (4)
