2. Discuss some of the secrets that impacted the story.
A secret that impacted the story was Nora's secret about how she saved Torvald's life. Torvald
discovers Nora’s secret, leading to a major turning point in their relationship. The secret Nora is
hiding is that she illegally forged her father's signature to take out a loan in order to save
Torvald's life. The only person who knew this secret was a man named Krogstad. Krogstad
knew this secret because he worked at the bank where Nora got the loan. He was later fired
because of his questionable past, as Torvald didn’t want any employees with a sketchy
background. Krogstad used this information to blackmail Nora, threatening to expose her unless
she persuaded Torvald to let him keep his job at the bank. Nora tries to prevent the letter
revealing her secret by convincing Torvald not to fire Krogstad and even meeting with Krogstad
himself, begging him not to say anything.
4. Describe one powerful character and one weak character. Explain.
Powerful: Nora
Nora is powerful because she takes action to save her husband's life. Even though what she did
was extremely risky, she was willing to do whatever it took to save someone she loves. I also
admire how Nora transforms from a submissive wife to an independent woman by standing up
for herself and leaving her husband. She realizes her marriage was built on lies and that Torvald
does not value her as a person.
Weak: Krogstad
Krogstad is weak because of his actions toward Nora. Instead of taking responsibility and
finding a new job, he tries to blackmail Nora, who wasn’t even the one to fire him. He should
have confronted the man who fired him, Torvald, and discussed the situation with him. Krogstad
hiding behind the scenes and using Nora as a shield is weak. He seems overly concerned about
his reputation and how others view him, which makes him insecure. Rather than caring about
the job itself, he cares more about how it reflects on his image.
