-informed consent

What is the nurse's role in regards to client rights?
-MUST protect these rights
-make sure pt is informed and understands their rights
Each client has the right to:
-be informed about all aspects of their care
-be involved in decision making process of their plan of care
-accept, refuse, or request modification in their plan of care
-receive car by competent individuals
, In regards to client rights, what does the patient Self-Determination Act (PSDA) state?
on admission the client is informed about their right to accept or refuse treatment (if competent
adult)
What are the steps if a patient decides to refuse a treatment or procedure?
-Asked to sign a doc that states they understand the risks of refusing tx and that they have
chosen to refuse tx
-decided to leave w/o discharge order? nurse notify provider and discusses w pt the risks of
leaving before discharge
-nurse documents the information that was provided
-they sign an AMA form (Against Medical Advice)
-They refuse to sign AMA form? nurse documents
If a client refuses a treatment, what are some of the things that he/she must be informed about?
-complications and those complications that can lead to death
-permanent physical or mental impairment or disability
What does advocacy in nursing refer to?
supporting clients by
-making sure they have all info to make decisions
-their rights are respected
-they are receiving the proper level of care
-act on their behalf when the action of others aren't are not in the client's best interest or when
changes need to be made in the plan of care
-act even when they disagree w the pt
-support and advocate for legislation that promotes public policies that protect clients as
