where diseases occur and how they are transmitted in populations.



-desirable to also know the mode of transmission and geographical distribution

responsible for transmission- an epidemiologist can provide physicians with

information that is important in determining the prognosis and treatment of a

disease.

-ex. Search for cause of toxic shock syndrome (example of retrospective study)

-initial phase of an epidemiological study- retrospective studies are more

common than prospective (looking forward) studies

-prospective studies- an epidemiologist chooses a group of people who are free

of a particular disease to study.
