HIV Prevention Plan Idea

Having an HIV plan in place for an African Culture that is at greater risk of

developing HIV, due to an epidemic is essential. In more recent years there has been a

more recent rise of African American men, who are “coming-out” as homosexuals and HIV is a

real looming fear. For this reason, this paper will discuss how HIV threatens and effects

homosexual African American Men. Here in the United States, it is more common for someone

to be homosexual. This puts them at a greater risk for being exposed to HIV. For African

American Men in the U.S., are at a high risk with around 60% being HIV-seropositive (Maulsby,

et alt., 2014). Many times they are unaware that they are in fact infected. Per the CDC, African

American Men who engage in homosexual relations account for a third of all newly infected

HIV patients here in the U.S. alone (CDC, 2016). Many of the overall differences within the

transmit ion of HIV is not easily explained via promiscuous behavior, having no information

about their partner’s health or sexual identity, or through substance abuse. Among all of the

research, there seems to be a real lack of supporting information or much information in general,

on the idea that homosexual black men may in fact be more susceptible to being infected with

HIV. This may be due to biological factors, genetic factors, some sort of phenomena in science,

circumcision, knowledge of their partner’s sexual health, or having been incarcerated prior

(Maulsby, et alt, 2014). Quite often when males have intercourse with males, regardless of being

HIV positive or not, assume their partner’s clear of HIV infection. This is a very poor way to

determine if one’s partner is HIV infected or not. One explanation for the phenomena of African

American Men being infected more regularly with HIV, could be the possibility of the

affordability and availability of health care. Researchers have performed various developmental

and social inquiries into why this is, as well as deploying various plans in an effort to decrease

the infection cases of HIV in black communities to no avail (Williams, Wyatt, & Wingood,
