THERMODYNAMICS AND HEAT
TRANSFER EXAM QUESTIONS AND
ANSWERS
Absolute Temperature - ANSWER-This is a temperature reading made relative to
absolute zero. We use the unit of Kelvins for these readings.
Heat Engine - ANSWER-a device that converts thermal energy into mechanical energy
Order - ANSWER-(biology) taxonomic group containing one or more families
Disorder - ANSWER-Any abnormality of structure or function
Geothermal - ANSWER-Energy derived from the heat in the interior of the earth
Thermal Equilibrium - ANSWER-when two things are at the same temperature
Specific Heat - ANSWER-The amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1
gram of a substance by 1 degree celcius
Coefficient of Restitution - ANSWER-The 'bounciness' of a collision. It ranges between
1 (perfectly elastic, perfect linear momentum conservation) and 0 (totally inelastic, no
linear momentum conservation). Nothing has a 1 value, as energy is always lost in a
collision (by sound, heat, light, etc). Is effected by materials of objects colliding, velocity
of the collision, and the temperature of the objects.
Pressure - ANSWER-Force per unit area.
Kinetic Energy - ANSWER-Energy of motion
Potential Energy - ANSWER-Stored Energy
Heat Exchange - ANSWER-This allows the nuclear reactions to occur in a place that is
sealed off from the rest of the environment. The thermal energy is transferred to heat
water, and the steam that is produced turns the turbines.
Radiation - ANSWER-Energy that is radiated or transmitted in the form of rays or waves
or particles.
Convection - ANSWER-Process by which, in a fluid being heated, the warmer part of
the mass will rise and the cooler portions will sink.
