Abstract
The current nursing practice and profession has been shaped by many nursing theorists over the
1900s including Ida Jean Orlando. Orlando formulated the Theory of Deliberative Nursing
Process in 1961 that teaches nurses to make purposeful and thought-out actions that directly
address the patient’s immediate needs. Her theory stresses the relationship between the nurse and
the patient, emphasizing that the nurse’s main goal is to identify what the patient needs help
with, check with the patient that they identified the correct needs, and include the patient in a
discussion about their care plan. The Theory of Deliberative Nursing Process ensures better and
more effective care for the patient and allows the nurse to identify the patient’s needs faster.
Orlando’s theory is successful, because it addresses the four concepts of the nursing
metaparadigm – person, nursing, health, and environment.
