AFK1506 2023
EXAM PREPARATION
This document is about what study material you should be reviewing, what you can do to
prepare for the exam, and what kind of questions you can expect in the exam.
There will be other documents detailing all the other stuff you’ll need to know, including
what invigilation software to use, how to use it, who to call if you encounter problems with
the online exam or invigilation software, and an ‘action plan’ for exactly what to do at what
time on exam day.
These are the things you must do as part of your exam preparation:
• Follow ALL instructions related to the exam provided in this document.
• Keep up to date with ALL information and resources posted on myModules.
• Use the forum in the section ‘EKSAMEN/EXAM’ on myModules to ask any exam-related
questions.
• Watch the Quickle about AI and literary essays in the section ‘Additional Resources’ to
understand why you are not allowed to use AI in the exam.
• Review your marked assessments with individual feedback and tutorial letters 201 and 202
with general feedback on Assessment 2 and Assessment 3. We will release your marked
Assessment 3 as soon as possible.
• Review study units 2, 3, 4 and 5 in the study guide.
• Review your e-tutor’s discussion of the book Flarde.
These are the things you should NOT do as part of your exam preparation:
• Don’t e-mail the lecturer with general exam related questions (use the myModules forum!).
Only e-mail the lecturer if you have a personal query (something that affects only you).
• Don’t ask other students for their marked assessments (it really won’t help you at all).
• Don’t ask other students for ‘correct answers’ or exam-related information in chatgroups. This
is a sure way to get the wrong information, the wrong answers and create unnecessary stress
and panic. The lecturers will have no sympathy or mercy for any students who do this.
• Don’t try to obtain and work out exam papers from previous years. It won’t help you at all
because we create brand new assessments and exams every year.
• You don’t have to review study unit 1 in the study guide. There will be no exam questions
about study unit 1.
These are the things you will be allowed to do during the exam:
• Use your study guide.
• Use the literary texts you downloaded from the e-reserves.
• Use your copy of Flarde.
• Use all your own notes.
• Use translation software and/or dictionaries.
o Remember, you must still write all the answers in the exam in Afrikaans, but you don’t have
to worry about perfect spelling and grammar. We don’t mark spelling and grammar because
this an FAL module – if we can understand your answer, you’ll get the appropriate marks.
These are the things you will absolutely NOT be allowed to do during the exam:
• Communicate in any way with any other student (if you encounter any problems with the
online stuff, you must contact the relevant university staff).
• Ask for or receive help in any form from any other individual (no, you are not allowed to have a
parent or a sibling or any other family member or a friend or a partner with you to ‘look up
stuff’, ‘translate stuff’ or ‘help you understand the questions’).
• Use any form of AI to generate any answer or part of an answer to any part of the exam.
• Copy answers from your assessments or another student’s assessments into your exam.
• Doing any one of these things WILL get you an official disciplinary hearing. This is an
exam, there is zero tolerance for rule breaking and academic dishonesty.
