SOCIOLOGY OF WORK AND EMPLOYMENT: TOPIC 8

TOPIC 8. Professional Relationships; Owners, Management and Workers: Justice and the
Common Good.

Professional employee relationship management is a process that companies use to effectively
manage all interactions with employees, ultimately to achieve the goals of the organization. For
larger companies, a human resources department helps with training and coaching supervisors
how to effectively manage professional relationships with employees. Small-business owners
should also have employee training, management and monitoring activities to keep things
running smoothly.

THE IMPORTANCE OF A STRONG EMPLOYER/EMPLOYEE RELATIONSHIP
When employees have a strong, healthy relationship with their employers, the entire company
benefits. Studies show that employees who have mutually respectful relationships with their
employers are more likely to be happy, loyal and productive in the long-run. Losing an
employee to a competitor can be devastating, but unfortunately, employees who do not have an
amicable relationship with their employers are more likely to leave. When an employee feels
comfortable around their employer, and appreciated, they are far more likely to remain loyal.
Companies that encourage positive relationships between workers and managers are generally
more successful, and since their employees are more likely to stick around, they don’t spend as
much on recruiting, hiring and training new workers.

1. Fewer Workplace Conflicts
When a person enjoys being around their manager and co-workers, they are less likely to seek
out conflicts. A peaceful workplace is just one of the many benefits of strong employee-
employer relationships, and if your workplace has been the scene of a conflict recently, you may
want to reevaluate how you relate to your workers. Conflicts reduce productivity levels, and
increase disharmony, and the energy expended quelling conflicts could be better spent working.

2. Increased Productivity
As mentioned above, an employee who has a positive relationship with their boss is more likely
to be productive, and the more productive your employees are, the more revenue your company
can generate. When an employee feels happy to work for you, they are more likely to put forth
their best effort and maintain a personal stake the projects they work on.

WAYS TO ENCOURAGE EMPLOYEES
1. Promote an Open Dialogue
Open dialogue doesn’t simply mean that managers talk to their employees frequently. Open
dialogue describes a work environment where employees aren’t hesitant to give honest feedback
to managers. Open dialog is constructive and transparent. It focuses on problem-solving. Of
course, you need good managers in the first place. Employees who feel that their managers are
open, honest, and trustworthy are far more likely to be less stressed and more happy at work.
Open dialogue helps to prevent employee confusion and unnecessary stress. It can decrease
friction between employees, especially management and employees. It helps to set clear goals
and expectations. When millions of employees were abruptly sent home to work in March 2020
(due to the pandemic), effective communication became one of the biggest challenges for
managers and the HR department.

2. Resolve conflicts
