VA TATTOOING REGULATIONS FOR THE
PMU STATE BOARD EXAM QUESTIONS

sterilization area - ANSWER-means a separate room or area separate from
workstations with restricted client
access in which tattooing instruments are cleaned, disinfected, and sterilized
in order to receive a license: - ANSWER-must not have been convicted of misdemeanor
or felony directly related to profession of tattoo

tattooer + 5 hours health training
board exam re-examination - ANSWER-if does not pass within one year, must re-submit
new application and exam fee
tattoo parlor license rules - ANSWER-non transferable- has to bear name and address
of business. any changes of name, address or ownership need to be reported in writing
within 30 days to board
if closing, reported to board in writing within 30 days and license must be returned by
lenders
limited term tattoo parlor license effective for 5 consecutive days prior to expiration date
only two limited term tattoo parlor licenses may be obtained within 30 days period
license expirations - ANSWER-expire two years from the last day of the month in which
they were issued
, renewal period (for both tattooer and parlor) - ANSWER-has 30 days to renew after
expiration date, after needs to apply for reinstatement and repay fees
reinstatement period (for both tattooer and parlor) - ANSWER-after expiration, has two
years to reinstate- afterwards, reinstatement is no longer possible me
must reapply for licensure as new applicant, meet all current requirements and pass
board exam again
license displayed - ANSWER-board issued license has to be displayed in reception area
of parlor or salon and in plain view of the public
(duplicate licenses shall be posted in a like manner in every parlor or salon where
licensee provides service)
hep b vaccine - ANSWER-all parlor owners shall offer full series of Hep B vaccine to
tattooer
tattooer need proof of vaccine, proof of immunity or written refusal
physical facilities- zoning - ANSWER-must be in permanent building or portion of
building and in location permissible under local zoning codes
must be fully separated from living quarters with no access
cleaning and sanitation for parlors - ANSWER-- must have blood spill kit in work area
- all work surfaces must be cleaned with EPA registered disinfectant/ bodily fluid spills
immediately disinfected w germicide
-PPE worn at all times during cleaning
- must have storage cabinets for pigments, instruments, dyes, etc
-bulk single use items commercially packaged and protected from contamination and
disposed of after use
- walls, ceilings and floors kept in good repair- work areas constructed of smooth, hard
and non porous materials (light colored)
-must have hand cleaning stations with unobstructed access to tattooing area (single
use towels or mechanical hand dryers, covered refuse container)
-no alcohol or tobacco in tattooing or sterilization area
sterilization and spores in parlors - ANSWER--all steam sterilizers need to be biological
spore tested at least monthly
