Motivation. Renewable energy is a topic of enormous importance in contemporary society, and is often the subject of articles in popular media. We will read some of these articles, learning about their content and, also, asking questions about the topics they are describing. Due date: Tuesday, 28-January, 9pm Assignment structure • Choose a pair of articles from a list of choices below. • Write about the article(s). Your write-up should: • (1) Briefly summarize both articles. If there’s a particular experiment or discovery being described, what was the motivation for undertaking this work? What did the researchers make/discover? What issues are being raised? Write this summary for an audience of your peers that aren’t enrolled in PHYS 162 and might not know (for example) the meaning of a KWhr. • Make an argument that is supported by both articles. For example, for popular science article assignment 1, one might have said (hypothetically) that ‘reliance’ is an issue as the energy mix attributable to intermittent, renewable energy sources grows. Be careful not to make overly broad arguments (e.g., ‘solar good!’) as these are much harder to support. It’s fine to point out weaknesses in your own argument and better if you can suggest studies/experiments that would address these weaknesses (to better support your argument…). • The write-up should be 300-500 words. (Consider this a rough guide.) • You’re encouraged to work in a group of 2 students . (Discussing the articles with others is one of the aims of this assignment.) I’ll allow you to work alone without a penalty, though. • Submit your writeup as a single-spaced PDF via Canvas. Just one submission per group is fine; indicate everyone’s names!
