Candidate’s material – Role-play
To be conducted by the teacher-examiner between 2 April and 17 May 2024.
Time allowed: 10–12 minutes (+ 12 minutes’ supervised preparation time)
Instructions
You must not use a dictionary at any time.
Supervised preparation time (12 minutes)
– Prepare this Role-play and the Photo card.
– You may make notes on an Additional Answer Sheet, but you must not write on the cards.
– You may refer to your notes during the Role-play and Photo card tasks.
The test (between 10 and 12 minutes)
– Your first task is the Role-play (approximately 2 minutes).
– Your second task is the Photo card (maximum 3 minutes).
– After these two tasks, you must hand both cards and any notes you made to the
teacher-examiner.
– The final task is the General Conversation (approximately 5–7 minutes) based on your
chosen Theme and the Theme which has not been covered on the Photo card.
– Remember: You must ask the teacher-examiner a question during the General Conversation.

The GCSE Panjabi Higher Tier Paper 2 Speaking exam is designed to assess your ability to speak
and communicate in Panjabi effectively in a variety of contexts. The speaking test evaluates your
fluency, pronunciation, and ability to engage in conversations, respond to questions, and express
opinions on different topics.
Overview of the Exam:
Date: June 2024
Format: This speaking exam will be conducted between the candidate and the teacher-examiner.
It usually takes place between April and May.
Duration: The exam lasts for about 10-12 minutes, depending on the number of tasks.
Components of the Exam:
The speaking exam is divided into three key sections:
1. Section 1: Role-play (Approximately 4-5 minutes)
o Description: In this part, you will engage in a role-play scenario. The teacher will
provide you with a situation, and you must respond in Panjabi to various questions or
requests. These scenarios are often based on everyday situations (e.g., booking a ticket,
ordering food, discussing plans, etc.).
o Tips for Success:
Practice common phrases and responses for everyday situations.
Focus on using correct grammar and pronunciation.
Make sure to listen carefully to the teacher's prompts and respond accordingly.
2. Section 2: Picture-based Discussion (Approximately 3-4 minutes)
o Description: You will be given a picture or a set of images, and you must describe what
you see in detail. You will also answer follow-up questions related to the picture.
o Tips for Success:
Use descriptive vocabulary to talk about the image (e.g., people, places, activities,
and emotions).
Practice using tenses appropriately (present, past, and future) to describe what is
happening or what happened.
Be prepared to answer questions about the picture in a detailed way.
3. Section 3: General Conversation (Approximately 4-5 minutes)
o Description: In this section, you will engage in a general conversation with the teacher
about different topics. These topics may include your personal life, interests, school,
hobbies, and future plans.
o Tips for Success:
Be ready to talk about a variety of subjects, such as your family, free-time
activities, studies, holidays, or your opinions on various matters.
Use a range of vocabulary and sentence structures to show your linguistic ability.
Respond naturally and fluently, using connectives and more complex sentences.
