Design activities to support the development of babies, toddlers and young
children
1. Choose one of the age groups and complete the following table: (Page 12)
AGE GROUP – 2 to 3 years old
DEVELOPMENTAL AREA ACTIVITY
PHYSICAL Catch the jumping frog: A laser light is used and
moved all over the floor for the children to
follow and try to catch.
SOCIAL Group story creation: Begin a discussion with
the children as a group, making up a story and
letting the children add to the story. Building
the story as a team.
EMOTIONAL Emotion sticks: Draw out different emotions
and cut them out as faces and stick them on ice
cream sticks. Children have turns acting out the
emotions.
LANGUAGE Songs, fingerplay & Poetry: Children sings
various age appropriate songs and rhymes.
They sing their favourite finger plays. This
encourages language/speech development.
INTELLECTUAL Noise identification: Play a cd with various
noises on it, have the children think about the
sounds and identify them.
CREATIVE Toilet roll stamping: Holding the toilet roll in an
upright position, kids stamp it into paint and
then on to paper, creating circle painting art.
2. Certain rhymes were used previously in the tables to illustrate the language abilities in
the different developmental stages of young children. Find some more rhymes that you
think will be suitable (developmentally appropriate) for each age group. Write out
these rhymes neatly and indicate for which age group you think they are suitable and
why you think this. Place the rhymes and your comments in your portfolio. (Page 13)
Babies to 1 year old:
I feel the below rhymes are suitable for babies and children up to 1 year old because even though
their language is not yet developed, they can still see hand gestures and hear the tone of a song.
Both rhymes below offer gentle hand movements for the child to watch as well as a calming tone
when sung.
