An electronic point of sale is a computerized system that is used in retail shops and restaurants. An EPOS
system has many functionalities including letting people pay for their goods, storing information about
the products, allow to see what products are in demand etc. Since it is a computerized system it makes
them a lot faster than using cash and you don’t need to pay monthly or yearly maintenance fees. They
are also relatively cheap allowing the supermarket, shop or restaurant to save money.

Data held on an EPOS system:
 Price – You will need to know the price to be able to them calculate other things such as
discounts, profits, total price etc. and the EPOS system allows you to store all of this
information.

track the amount left as shoppers purchase more of that item.
 Barcode – The barcode is unique to the product and can be used to refer to the given product.
EPOS systems will be able to store each individual barcode that you have in the store and add
new ones.
 Discount – If the EPOS system stores the discounts it can automatically be subtracted from the
price when the product is scanned.
 Terminal ID – The terminal ID can be used to identify which tills were working and how
many customers they had which can all be stored on the EPOS system.
 Payment Type – An EPOS allows you to pay for your products in many different ways and a
typical supermarket might want to know what the most common way their customers pay is,

 Date/Time of purchase – You can analyse what time of year and what time of date you are
able
 Loyalty card Details – When a customer scans their club card at the EPOS the information about
their purchases will be stored on the system.
 Name of Product – The EPOS system can store the name of each product as it is being scanned.
 Total number of items – The total number of items can be used by the business to store data
about the amount of items they sell each time.

What data on the EPOS system is used for in different functional areas?
Human Resources (HR) – Human Resources will have the tasks of issuing contracts, process wages,
record holidays, record personal details, book and record training. An EPOS system can look at times
staff work and the jobs they do e.g. at the till in order to apply the right staff where they are need it and
