Contingency Assignment

Due 22 December 2024

Question 1 (Unit 1): 25 marks

Based on what you have learnt in Unit 1 of the Module, and the Module in
general, write an essay in which you reflect on what you think it takes to become
an internationally acclaimedand respected educational researcher. (1200 – 1600
words)

Becoming an internationally acclaimed and respected educational researcher
requires dedication, hard work, and specific skills. An educational researcher plays
a vital role in improving learning and teaching by investigating challenges and
finding solutions. To be recognized globally, a researcher must meet high
standards, show deep understanding of education, and contribute significantly to
knowledge. This essay reflects on key qualities and practices necessary to achieve
this, based on Unit 1 of the Module and its broader content.

1. Developing Strong Research Skills

Educational research demands strong research skills. A respected researcher
knows how to design a study, collect data, and analyze results. For example, they
must understand qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method approaches and
decide which is best for their study (Creswell, 2014). These skills ensure that
research findings are reliable and valid.

Additionally, researchers must stay updated on the latest methods and tools. This
could include learning to use statistical software or adopting innovative data
collection techniques such as digital surveys or classroom observations.

, 2. Having a Clear Focus and Purpose

A good researcher has a clear research purpose. They identify problems in
education and develop questions to explore these issues. For instance, studying
why learners in rural areas struggle to access quality education can lead to
meaningful recommendations. According to Cohen et al. (2018), narrowing the
focus ensures that research addresses specific needs and provides actionable
insights.

Being purposeful also involves aligning research with global priorities, such as the
United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 4, which emphasizes inclusive and
equitable education.

3. Building Knowledge of Educational Theories

To be respected, a researcher must have deep knowledge of educational theories
and concepts. This knowledge forms the foundation for interpreting findings and
making recommendations. For example, understanding Vygotsky's theory of
social constructivism helps researchers explore how children learn through
interaction (Vygotsky, 1978).

Moreover, researchers must read widely to stay informed about new theories and
debates in education. This continuous learning shows commitment to the field
and builds credibility.
