How did you become inspired to be in the Hospitality Industry? - ANSWERS-If I'm
being honest, working in hospitality was never my plan. Throughout college I
,hoped to get a job working in HR at some large company. Then a global pandemic
hit and I was scheduled to graduate a year early and suddenly I was a senior with
very little work experience in the field of HR. So as you can imagine, I struggled to
find anything at the end of my senior year. So when I got Marriott's summer
internship, I was relieved to have something but also a little bummed because it
wasn't the HR position. Regardless I went in with an open mind and absolutely
loved it. I loved meeting new people everyday, the ability to make a guest's day,
the craziness of the hotel, the cohesiveness of the different departments
together, and most of all the traveling and new experiences.
Name a time you failed and how you handled it. - ANSWERS-Throughout my
academic career, I had never stood out or done exceptionally well until my last
few years of college so graduating in the Departmental Honors Program would be
a great personal accomplishment. Requirements of the program were to
complete a two-semester long senior thesis alongside an advisor. A little ways
into my first semester of the thesis, my advisor removed herself from the project.
I tried so hard to find another advisor and remain in the program but it just didn't
work out and I had to turn the thesis into an independent study.
After I failed I felt like I worked so hard the past few years and had nothing to
show, I felt defeated. So I threw myself into my classes in hopes of getting my
cumulative GPA high enough for honors. I challenged myself to take 18 credits
one semester then 21 credits the next which paid off because I ended up with a
4.0 GPA in both semesters and graduated Cum Laude.
Tell me about a time you had to work with a diverse group of people. - ANSWERS-
I've had to work with a diverse group of people several times throughout my
academic career, however, 1 time in particular stands out. I was in my Intro to HR
course and we were randomly divided into teams that we essentially had to run a
business with throughout the semester. I was paired with an older blue collar
male who had a very tunnel-vision type of perspective, a young eager, first
, generation college student, and an international student who spoke very broken
english.
We had a difficult time getting the ball rolling because we each had very different
perspectives. So for the first few meetings we couldn't decide on anything. Once
we learned how to communicate with each other tho, we were able to make
decisions as a team. As a result we ended with the highest grade in the class on
the project.
Why Marriott? - ANSWERS-I want to work for Marriott mainly because I strongly
associate with their core values. The concept of putting people first, pursuing
excellence, embracing change, acting with integrity, and serving the world
interest me a lot. Marriott's underlying mission is so much more than just
becoming the best travel company.
Tell me about a time when you made a great customer relationship. - ANSWERS-I
was checking in this older couple. I started talking to him to fill the silence while I
found his reservation. I learned that he was from Pittsburgh so we joked about
the Philly/Pittsburgh rivalry. When I asked him what brought him and his wife to
the island, he said they flew down for a relaxing getaway. It had been a rough
year for them as this was their first vacation since the pandemic started and his
wife had been diagnosed with cancer. He asked if we had any Ocean-Front rooms
available that he could upgrade to which we were sold out of. Instead, I was able
to put them on our highest floor with the best view of the ocean that I could find.
The next day, he came down to the front desk and thanked me for the view. Then
he asked if I could deliver a postcard to another guest at the resort. He only knew
the guests first name, hometown, and checkout date. So, at first I was obviously a
little hesitant, especially for safety reasons. Then he revealed that he had met this
