,Introduction
The Long-term care is practiced on the basis of providing services that assist with the
medical needs of an individual who may struggle with chronic illnesses that disable them from
completing daily activities during a long period of time to allow them to live with independence
and security. Long-term care has greatly improved and developed over the years and will
continue to progress as the rates of LTC consumers do. In the next 10 years LTC will be one of
the biggest
and most influenced medical practices of healthcare due to the large increasement of baby
boomers and longevity in humans. It is quite essential to learn about why long-term care plays
such a big
role in the older adult population and to understand the community established by long-term
care in the United States.
Long-Term Care Consumers
The community of the long-term care
field will be a frequent reference made and that is because having the knowledge of who
benefits from LTC programs and services is crucial to understanding the importance of long-
term care itself.
, Long-term care is mainly associated with the care of senior adults who live their day-to-
day lives struggling with chronic disease but is not only limited to that specific population. The
truth is, in the healthcare industry long-term care is available for many different people regardless
of age. It is very important to understand, though, that seniors do make up most of long-term
care’s consumers and that most LTC services are directed towards the elderly population.
According to
the Family Caregiver Alliance (n.d.), “Approximately 63% are persons aged 65 and older (6.3
million).” The higher numbers of seniors mean relevance is brought to because as people age
they become more vulnerable and are at a higher risk of chronic illness. These chronic illnesses
such as Alzheimer’s, heart disease, high cholesterol, and arthritis can have a lasting negative
effect on an individual’s functionality (whether that be physical or mental) and can cause safety
hazards within one’s life.
There are different causes and reasons an individual may need long-term care. Gender
plays a role: Women are known to be primary consumers of long-term care because they have
been said to have a longer lifespan than males. Marital status, a person’s practiced lifestyle (diet,
mental health, drugs, etc.), and family’s health history can all play key factors in whether a person
is set up for long-term care.
The Varying Types of LTC Services
The predication of who may need long-term care is difficult and no matter the type of
consumer there are a variety of different types of long-term care services and programs that
prioritize a specific or all aspects of one’s health. Some of the most common types of long-
term care services include:
- Health/Emergency
Emergency aid services for the long-term population are services that specialize in emergency
care for older adults. An example would be Geriatrics-Friendly Emergency care service. In the
