Theory is defined as a system of interconnected abstractions/idea that
summarizes and organizes knowledge about the social world.
The function of theory in social research essentially is to explore topics that dont
have answers (scientifically) but still need some sort of explanation to filter
results.
The main functions of theories are: explaining the phenomena (theories provide
crucial understanding of what happens, why it happened, and under what
conditions it has happened in), to act as a guidance for the research work as
well as the practice (theories help provide focus and directs the attention of the
researcher towards specific phenomena), to fosters integrations (theories
essentially aid in the finding solutions to questions and the understanding of
why something may have happened).
Theory deals with what one observes and experiences within society. Social
research takes that experience and those observations and turns it into what it
is and why. Although theory is not a fact nor can it settle debates, it can be
challenged and adapted by other researchers - it is a logical aspect of science.
