Brain Dominance Assessment and Reflection Paper
Brain dominance refers to the distinct functions of the brain's left and right hemispheres.
The left hemisphere typically handles quick, literal interpretations of speech, while the right
hemisphere excels at making inferences, modulating speech, and fostering self-awareness. The
concept of brain dominance suggests that the brain is composed of asymmetric and functionally
specialized parts, with one hemisphere often being more dominant than the other. According to
this theory, people who are left-brain dominant excel in careers involving linear thinking, math,
and verbal information. On the other hand, "right-brained people" are often described as more
emotional, intuitive, and creative, thriving in careers that involve creative expression and free-
thinking.
Based on these distinctions, I took a brain dominance test and scored a seven, indicating
that I am left-brain dominant. This means I prefer logical order, focus on details rather than
concepts, plan ahead, and approach decisions in a practical, realistic, and non-impulsive manner.
Interestingly, 77% of test takers are more right-brain dominant than I am.
I took the quiz fairly quickly to avoid overthinking the questions, which made it
interesting to observe the attributes they were assessing related to left and right brain functions. I
was surprised by my results, as I didn’t expect to be so left-brain dominant. My major is civil
engineering, and I wonder how my results would have differed before starting college. Over
