SYSTEMS APPROACH CHAPTER 4
bolt head - ANS-used to loosen and tighten the bolt
bolt diameter - ANS-the measurement across the diameter of the threaded area
bolt shank - ANS-the threaded area of the bolt
thread pitch - ANS-the number of threads that are 1 inch of the threaded length and is
expressed in number of threads per inch
grade marks - ANS-radial lines
thread pitch gauge - ANS-provides a quick and accurate way to check the thread pitch
of a fastener
tap - ANS-a small tool used for hand cutting internal threads
dies - ANS-the opposite of taps because they cut external threads o bolts, rods, and
pipes rather than internal threads
special thread taps - ANS-special taps for spark plug bores
vernier caliper - ANS-a measuring tool that can make inside, outside, or depth
measurements
mechanist's rule - ANS-each edge of this basic measuring tool is divided into
increments based on different scale
dial caliper - ANS-an easier-to-use version of the vernier caliper
micrometer - ANS-used to measure linear outside and inside dimensions
telescoping gauges - ANS-used for measuring bore diameters and other clearances
ball gauge - ANS-designed to be used on small bores, but works just like a telescoping
gauge
feeler gauge - ANS-a thin strip of metal or plastic of known and closely controlled
thickness
straightedge - ANS-no more than a flat bar machined to be totally flat and straight
dial indicator - ANS-calibrated in 0.001 inch increments
