STATISTICS 101 - Module 3b Written Homework
Jordan Spieth has been one of the best mid range putters on the PGA Tour, especially when putting between
ten and fifteen feet away from the hole. Suppose we would like to learn about what his “true putting ability” is
from that distance. In other words, what is the (true) proportion of the time he makes a putt from that distance.
Consider a sample of 120 putts that Jordan attempted between ten and fifteen feet from the hole during the
2020 PGA Tour season. Assume that the sample was randomly taken
from “all possible putts” he could attempt from that distance.

1. The population we can imagine is “all possible putts” that Jordan could attempt between 10 - 15 away
from the hole. Every time he would ever putt from that distance, he can either make the putt or not.
Describe the population proportion of interest in words.

Population Proportion: The true proportion of putts Jordan Speith can make when he is between ten and fifteen feet away from the hole

We want to know his "true putting ability"

2. Describe the sample taken in words.

The sample is of 120 putts that Jordan attempted between ten and fifteen feet from the hole during 2020 PGA tour

3. Give the value of the sample proportion we can use to learn about the population proportion.

4. Calculate a 95% confidence interval for the proportion of interest. Make sure to check all conditions needed
for a confidence interval first.
