Define and describe the technique of the 4 physical examination skills: Inspection
palpation percussion auscultation - Answer-Inspection: Concentrated watching of the
patient as a whole and every body system. Inspection always comes first and must
compare left and right side of the body.
Palpation: assesses texture, temperature, moisture, organ location and size, swelling,
vibration, pulsation, rigidity, lumps, masses, tenderness, pain or crepitus. It is performed
with fingertips, grasping action, back of hands (temp), and base of fingers. Start with a
light palpation then go deeper.
Percussion: is tapping the persons skin with short, sharp strokes to assess underlying
structures. This helps depict location size and density of organ as well as superficial
masses.
Auscultation: listening to sounds produced by the body like lungs, bowel, heart and
blood vessels.
