Samenvatting van samenvatting

Hoor- en werkcollege 1
Multilevel theory of emergence: Elements starts at the lower level within the
initial stage. These elements can be individuals or teams. After time, these
elements start to interact and go to medium level. Process mechanisms start to
happen as the lower level components start to interact. Examples of these
process mechanisms are coordination or trust. Different systems, have different
process mechanisms, which explains the differences in system-level results. Later
in time, the medium level components go to a higher level, where system-level
results start to happen. This can be seen as emergence. The phenomena of
emergence can not be traced back to to individual behaviors as it is a result of
the interaction between the lower level components.
This whole process is influenced by contextual factors, like culture. Also, there is
downward causation, or self-organization, which means that the system level
results influence the lower level behavior.
Complexity science: Gaat over homogeneous components, which are
interrelated, interconnected and interdependence. Complexity science is in a
non-linear way of thinking as there can be exponential growth due to
disproportionally important elements that can change the whole system. Daarom
‘the best way to organize,
depends on the nature of the environment’.
Lawrence & Lorsche approach:

, Werkcollege 2
Organizations as complex socio-technical systems en complex adaptive systems
perspective
Technological perspective: je kunt technology (technological complexity)
analyseren vanuit 3 componenten:
 Describing technology from a rational perspective
 Complexity x Uncertainty x Interdependence = task information requirements
1. Complexity: aantal verschillende items waarmee simultaneously gedealt moet
worden (aantal inputs en outputs).
2. Uncertainty: hoeveel workrelated items kunnen varieren (variability of
input/major product changes etc.)
a. Bv. Als input steeds verandert dan meer uncertainty.
3. Interdependence  how a change in one element, causes a change in another
element. 3 soorten:
Veel samenwerking en veel back and forth.
Complexity x Uncertainty x Interdependence = task information requirements
In de technological perspective zijn er twee soorten coordination mechanisms;
Bv. rules,
schedules, hieracrhy, departmentalization etc. (vaak niet voldoende in
complexe cases).
2 soorten: 1)
reducing amount of info to be processed (door de structuur aan te passen) en 2)
increase information processing capability.
1. Reducing amount of information to be processed
