Leopold's Maneuvers - ANS A series of four maneuvers designed to provide a systematic
approach whereby the examiner may determine fetal presentation and position.
Cardinal movements of labor - ANS 1. Engagement
2. Descent
3. Flexion
4. Internal Rotation
5. Extension
6. External Rotation
7. Expulsion
S/S of hyperventilation - ANS dizziness, tingling of hands and feet, cramps and muscle spasms
of hands, numbness around nose and mouth, blurring of vision
Tx for hyperventilation - ANS moist wash cloth over mouth, breathe in cupped hands, breathe
slowly, hold breath for a few secs before exhaling
epidural block - ANS - the injection of anesthesia into the spinal cord (epidural space)
- given when the cervix is at least 4cm dilated
-obersve for hypotension and urinary retention
assess bp
-may require foley if mother cant void
blocks transmission of pain
Prolasped umbilical cord - ANS knee-chest or Trendelenburg
uterine rupture - ANS a tear in the wall of the uterus if the muscle cannot withstand pressure
inside the organ
complete uterine rupture - ANS direct communication between uterine and peritoneal cavities
incomplete uterine rupture - ANS The uterus tears into a nearby structure, such as a ligament,
but not all the way into the abdominal cavity
, dehiscence uterine rupture - ANS partial separation of an old uterine scar. May be little or no
bleeding.
postpartum danger signs - ANS fever greater than 100.4, persistent lochia rubra or lochia with
foul odor, bright red bleeding, clots larger than golf ball, prolonged pains, signs of UTI, localized
breast tenderness, discharge from suture, postpartum, abdominal pain or back ache
moms can become - ANS pregnant before her first period after deliver even when breastfeeding
(menses can return in about 8 weeks if breastfeeding and 5 weeks if formula feeding)
Oxytocin (Pitocin) - ANS -can cause hypotension
-given for uterus to contract to control bleeding
APGAR score 0-3 - ANS hr, respiration, muscle tone, reflex irritability, color. (done after delivery)
thermoregulation of infant - ANS dry off quickly, swaddle in blanket, place hat on head, keep
away from vents and windows
adding solid foods - ANS 1st 5-6 months of age. (tongue extrusion reflex has disappeared and
GI can digest)
hypoglycemia in infants - ANS blood glucose lower than 45
S/S of hypoglycemia - ANS s/s
jitteriness
poor muscle tone
respiratory difficult
low temp
low suck
lethargy
high pitch cry
seizures
sweating
Hydrocephalus (water head) - ANS -increase in the cerebrospinal fluid within the ventriculus of
the brain
-increased pressure changes in brain
-increased head size (fontanelles bulge which may require a cesarean delivery)
Signs of hydrocephalus - ANS scalp is shiny, scalp veins are dilated
obstruction of CSF to subarachnoid space - ANS non-communication hydrocephalus
CSF is inadequately absorbed in the subarachnoid space - ANS communication hydrocephalus
