ed.).
§ Chapter 16: Motivating Operations
o Pp. 383–390 (start at “Conditioned Motivating Operations (CMOs)”; stop

Guided Reading Questions
Instructions: Answer the following questions while reading the assigned pages for this
unit. The answers to these questions can be found directly in the reading. After
answering the questions, complete the Reading Check in the course. The Reading
Check will consist of questions selected from the Guided Reading Questions along with
answer choices. You will select the answer choice that matches the answer you
recorded while reading the assignment. You may use the Guided Reading Questions
and the answers you recorded while completing the Reading Check.
Cooper, Heron, & Heward (2020): Ch. 16 Pp. 383–390
1. What are motivating variables that alter the reinforcing effectiveness of other stimuli,
objects or events as a result of the organism’s learning?
Conditioned Motivating Operations
2. How does a reflexive CMO affect behavior?
Alters a relation to itself (makes own removal effective as reinforcement)
3. How does a previously neutral stimulus acquire its MO effects in the case of a CMO-
S?
By being paired with a UMO.
4. How can the relationship between the CMO-S and an effective MO generally be
weakened?
By two kinds of MO unpairing.
5. What are the two kinds of MO unpairing?
1. Presenting the previously neutral stimulus (now CMO-S) without the effective MO or 2. presenting the MO as often
in the absence of the CMO-S as in its presence.
6. Why is the warning stimulus for a CMO-R not an SD?
The warming stimulus is not an SD correlated with the availability of the consequence, but rather an MO related to the
reinforcing effectiveness of the consequence.
