Anatomy and Physiology Unit 1 Report

1. Determine if Matt and Maria are about the correct weight based on their height. To
do this, you can compare their BMI to published medical tables related to ideal
values.

According to BMI tables, Matt is considered overweight. A 19-year-old male with a height of 6’1
should be between 150-180 pounds to have a healthy BMI. He is a 6’1 male that weighs 275
pounds which gives an BMI of 36.5 which is considered obese and not healthy. On the other
hand, Maria is a 19-year-old, 5’8 female who weighs 130 pounds. According to the BMI table, a
5’8 adult should be between 130-160 pounds to be considered healthy on the BMI. Therefore,
Maria is considered to have a healthy BMI since she weighs 130 pounds.

2. Evaluate their diet to determine how many calories they both managed to consume on
this particular day. (Keep track of where you find the information, for we will revisit
this data later in the semester for a more detailed analysis).

Looking at Matt’s diet first, his breakfast at IHOP totaled to be 1980 calories. The chicken and
waffles were 1030 total calories, the strawberry banana waffles were 850 calories, and his cup
of coffee was 100. His lunch at Burger King totaled to be 1453 calories. His double whopper
with cheese was 980 calories, 3 jalapeno poppers were 123 calories, and a medium Dr. Pepper
was 350 calories. Matt’s subway meal totaled to be 730 calories. His sweet onion chicken teriyaki
was 330 calories, his coca cola drink was 240 calories, and a bag of lays classic chips were 160
calories. Matt’s pizza hut dinner totaled to be 870 calories, with each slice being 290 calories.
Matt’s total calories consumed during the day 5033 calories.

Looking at Maria’s diet, her breakfast at IHOP totaled to be 1351 calories. Her spinach and
mushroom omelet were 911 calories, the side of buttered toast was 250 calories, and the 16 oz
tropicana orange juice was 190 calories. Maria’s lunch at Burger King totaled to be 1620
calories. Her bacon and cheese crispy chicken sandwich were 800 calories, large fries were 400
calories, and a large coke was 390 calories. Then, at Subway, she consumed a total of 705
calories. Her 6” bacon and chicken ranch melt were 225 calories, the chocolate chip cookie was
220 calories, and the 21 oz sprite was 260 calories. Lastly, her dinner at pizza hut also totaled to
be 870 calories for 3 slices of meat lover’s pizza. Her total calories consumed for this day was
4546 calories.

3. Being that this is a typical routine for Matt and Maria, would you expect them to
be heavier or lighter at the end of one year and by about how many pounds? You
might need to consider their Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) in determining the total
caloric expenditure.

According to Matt’s height, weight, and age, the number of calories he needs to consume to
maintain his weight is 2578 calories. If he wanted to lose weight, he would need to consume less
than 2578 calories. At this rate, 5033 calories per day would only lead him to a route to gain
weight. It would be expected that by the end of the year, he would be heavier and would weight
about 300-315 pounds.
