PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action Therapeutic Use
Sprironolactone competes for spots on Treatment of hypertension, treatment of
receptors typically occupied by aldosterone, edema (hepatic cirrhosis), treat primary
preventing sodium and water reabsorption hyperaldosteronism
and increasing their excretion
Complications Medication Administration
Encephalopathy, hypotension, tinnitus, vision changes, Oral suspension, tablets
gastric bleeding, abdominal pain, hyperglycemia, breast
pain, renal failure, thrombocytopenia, hepatocellular
toxicity
Contraindications/Precautions
-Addison's disease
-Concomitant use of eplerenone
-Hyperkalemia Nursing Interventions
-Hypersensitivity -Evalute serum potassium level
-Monitor patient with renal
impairment
-Monitor blood pressure and
weight
Interactions
ACE inhibitors, aldosterone blockers, NSAIDs,
potassium-containing drugs/supplements, heparin,
trimethoprim, acetylsalicylic acid, cholestyramine, digoxin,
lithium
