Sprironolactone competes for spots on Treatment of hypertension, treatment of
receptors typically occupied by aldosterone, edema (hepatic cirrhosis), treat primary
preventing sodium and water reabsorption hyperaldosteronism
and increasing their excretion
Complications Medication Administration
Encephalopathy, hypotension, tinnitus, vision changes, Oral suspension, tablets
gastric bleeding, abdominal pain, hyperglycemia, breast
pain, renal failure, thrombocytopenia, hepatocellular
toxicity
Contraindications/Precautions
-Addison's disease
-Concomitant use of eplerenone
-Hyperkalemia Nursing Interventions
-Hypersensitivity -Evalute serum potassium level
-Monitor patient with renal
impairment
-Monitor blood pressure and
weight
Interactions
ACE inhibitors, aldosterone blockers, NSAIDs,
potassium-containing drugs/supplements, heparin,
trimethoprim, acetylsalicylic acid, cholestyramine, digoxin,
lithium
Client Education
-Take with meals or milk
-Teach how to measure blood
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness pressure
-Management of hypertension -Warn of dizziness
-Reduction of edema -Inform to tell provider about
new medications
-Inform women to report
(suspected/known) pregnancy
