Chapter 4: TISSUE
→ A group of tissue that works together
I. Epithelial Tissue
Four main kinds of Tissue
1. Epithelial Tissue
2. Connective Tissue
3. Muscle Tissue
4. Nervous Tissue
Epithelial Tissue classified by arrangement of cells:
• Simple (Simple squamous epithelium)
- Single layer of scalelike cells
Function: transportation
• Stratified (Stratified squamous epithelium)
- Several layers of closely packed cells, multiple layers of thin irregularly
shaped cells.
Function: Protection (primary)
Epithelial Tissue can be classified as:
- Covers the body and lines the cavities
- Classified based on the number of cells and the number of the layers
- Forms a continues sheet of cells with no blood vessels.
Cell shaped of Epithelial tissue:
• Squamous
• Cuboidal
• Columnar
• Transitional
Examples of Epithelial tissue:
• Simple columnar epithelium
- Columnar cells arranged in a single layer
- Line stomach and intestines
- Contain mucus-producing goblet cells
- Specialized for absorption
Example: Digestive system
• Stratified squamous epithelium
- Found in the areas, such as urinary bladder, that stretch
