QUESTION 1 (a) Give a brief explanation of the term
‘conflict’ as found in a modern novel or drama. (10)
In literature, "conflict" refers to the central struggle between opposing forces that drives the plot
forward. In modern novels or dramas, conflict is typically a tension or problem faced by the
protagonist that can be either internal (psychological) or external (with other characters or
societal forces).

1. Internal Conflict: This occurs when a character struggles with personal dilemmas,
emotions, or moral decisions. For example, in The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger,
Holden Caulfield battles inner turmoil and confusion about identity, adulthood, and loss.
2. External Conflict: This involves a character facing challenges from outside forces, such
as other characters, society, nature, or technology. In A Streetcar Named Desire by
Tennessee Williams, Blanche DuBois faces external conflict with Stanley Kowalski,
representing class struggle and societal expectations.

Conflict is essential in creating tension, engaging readers, and developing character arcs, as it
propels characters to make decisions that shape the narrative’s outcome.

(b) The structure of an essay may be divided into 3 parts.
Identify these 3 parts and then give a brief discussion of
each part. (9) (c) Read the following poem and answer
