ASSIGNMENT 4

QUESTION

Your study guide CAD1501 explains prenatal development.

1.1 Explanation of Prenatal Development
Prenatal development refers to the process of growth and formation that occurs from the
moment of conception until birth. During this period, the baby grows from a single cell
into a fully developed infant. This process occurs in a structured, organized manner and
is influenced by both biological factors (such as genes) and environmental factors (such
as the mother's health and nutrition).

1.2 The Three Phases of Prenatal Development

Germinal Stage (0-2 weeks): This is the earliest stage that begins at conception. The
fertilized egg, known as a zygote, divides rapidly and forms a cluster of cells. This ball of
cells travels down the fallopian tube and implants itself into the lining of the uterus.

Embryonic Stage (2-8 weeks): During this stage, the implanted mass of cells is now
referred to as an embryo. Critical systems such as the nervous system, heart, and
digestive system begin to form. The basic structure of the body also takes shape during
this phase. It is a highly sensitive period because major organs are developing.

Fetal Stage (8 weeks-birth): This is the longest stage of prenatal development. The
embryo is now referred to as a fetus, and it continues to grow and develop. By this stage,
the organs formed during the embryonic stage begin to function. The fetus gains weight,
develops more refined bodily systems, and prepares for birth.
