The abolition of slavery in the United States in 1865 was a significant milestone in the
long and tumultuous history of race relations. However, this legal change did not signal
the end of inequality between black and white people. In fact, racial disparities
continued to manifest in social, economic, political, and legal systems throughout the
19th century and beyond. These inequalities were rooted in the legacies of slavery and

as well as social segregation.
