Charts and graphs are ideal for visually summarizing large amounts of data, enabling
you to see patterns or trends more easily than you can with tables. They make it easy to
compare two or three data sets and are well suited for identifying relationships between
data sets. Charts and graphs make it easier to estimate values at a glance than can
tables.
The drawback of using charts and graphs is that, in some cases, data can be
oversimplified. Under these circumstances, charts and graphs may give a misleading
view of the data, which reduces their effectiveness when presenting the information.
However, charts and graphs can also be too complex to be helpful as aids for
presentations.
Having Operated two high-end collision repair centers, I was well aware that profit and
loss figures do not always correlate with what was going on in the shops. Using charts
and graphs, I quickly determined that the profit and loss statements were influenced due
to unneeded parts sitting in the shop for extended periods rather than being returned to
vendors. By understanding what the problem was, I was able to address the issue
immediately.
