1. Case study 1 10 marks You are one of three social
workers employed by an NGO. This NGO is the only
organisation delivering social work services in the local
township. It is 15:30. You receive a call from the social
worker at the local hospital. She reports the following: A
six-week-old infant (girl) has been admitted to the local
hospital with internal burn injuries Doctors are busy with
the infant. If the infant survives, she will have a tube
implanted to be fed. This will be because of the severity
of the injuries. The mother of the baby gave her poison to
drink. The mother is 16 years old and resides with her
mother. The household also includes two other children,
aged 7 and 9 years, who do attend school. The social
worker do give you the address in the local township.
How would you approach the case, in your answer,
identify the risks, recommend appropriate interventions.
To approach this case, consider it from both an immediate and a long-term perspective, focusing
on child safety, family dynamics, and mental health support. Here's how you could address it:

1. Assessment of the Immediate Situation:

 Risk to the infant: The most pressing concern is the safety and health of the infant, who
has suffered severe injuries. The infant's life is at risk, and medical intervention is
ongoing.
 Risk to other children: There are two other children, aged 7 and 9, in the household. It is
critical to assess whether they are at risk of harm, either directly from their mother or
indirectly due to a neglectful or unsafe environment.
 Risk to the mother (the 16-year-old): The mother may be suffering from psychological
distress, post-partum depression, or other mental health issues. She also may be a minor
herself and could be vulnerable, needing support.

2. Identifying the Risks:

 Physical risk to the infant: Ongoing medical care is required. The infant may face
permanent health issues, such as needing to be tube-fed.
