ACTION: faecal softening + stimulant laxative

NURSING CONSIDERATION: taken after meal (usually evening), ensure adequate fluid intake
and dietary fibre incorporated within meals

etc. (hepatic cirrhosis, renal impairment and nephrotic syndrome) + can also be used for
hypertension
ACTION: potent diuretic, inhibits reabsorption of sodium and chloride back in the body via the
ascending limb of the loop of Henle, overall lowers fluid retention in body.
(build up of electrolytes/ions in the asc. loop of Henle attracts water, and is urinated)
Furosemide (common brand name, route, dose) - answer✔COMMON BRAND NAME: Lasix
ROUTE: oral tablet (20mg or 40mg stock strength) or IV (usually 10mg/1mL strength)

DOSE: 20-80mg mane OR. BD (usually at 0800 and 1400hrs)

BD: bis in die = twice daily
Furosemide (drug class, nursing consideration) - answer✔DRUG CLASS: diuretic
NOTE: diuretics promote diuresis = excess or increased production of urine
(side effect of taking diuretic medications)
NURSING CONSIDERATIONS:
Possible hypotension (lower BP too much, thus later check blood pressure after administering)
Monitor pt.'s electrolyte levels (especially potassium levels) as medication inhibits the
reabsorption of electrolytes
Esomeprazole (indication + action) - answer✔INDICATION: Gastro-oesophageal reflux
disease (GORD) + peptic ulcer disease
ACTION: reduces secretion of gastric acid by inhibiting the gastric (H+, K+) ATPase enzyme in
the parietal cells of the stomach
Esomeprazole (common brand name, route, dose) - answer✔COMMON BRAND NAME:
Nexium
ROUTE: Oral tablet (usually enteric-coated) or IV
DOSE: 20-40mg daily
Esomeprazole (drug class, nursing consideration) - answer✔DRUG CLASS: proton pump
inhibitor (PPI)
NOTE: protons are positive (such as H+ and K+), which it reduces the secretion of gastric acid
by inhibiting these protons via their pumps
NURSING CONSIDERATION: do not crush nor chew (normally enteric tablets)
can have interactions w/ St. John's Wart tablet (avoid giving both to patient).
